Yard Sales
Yesterday my wife and I were involved in our first yard sale. Luckily we jumped on board with a community yard sale where an organizer collected some money, took care of all the advertising and put signs up everywhere. All we had to do was get our stuff out in our yard to sell. Turns out that three other houses in our cul-de-sac were also participating along with a slew of other houses on the neighboring streets.
All I can say is it’s a different kind of experience. The times for the sale were 7AM-noon. At 6:30 there was someone driving around trying to get early deals. By 7:20 we had sold all of our big ticket items (a dresser, kitchen table and chairs and some patio furniture). For the next hour and half it was like someone had dropped a bag of sugar on a picnic cloth. People swarmed our porch like ants and we had more cars come through the neighborhood than we do at Halloween (which is quite a lot).
It seemed the like the people that came that first hour were the “regulars”. They all knew each other and it almost seemed like a competition to them of what deals they had gotten. Then you had people who were obviously buying stuff to re-sell at a flea market. Then there was one guy buying old furniture to re-sell at his used furniture business.
We made out okay, not a ton of money, but the point was to get rid of as much of this crap as we could. All the big stuff was sold and the rest we donated. Was it worth it? I don’t know, but was definitely interesting.
