Smart Paper
I keep waiting for this stuff to come out. I think the potential for it is just unbelievable. The ability to have displays that look, feel, and act like paper or fabric just has so many uses. The Wand and Scrolling displays are really cool and what I’m looking forward to the most. In the movie “Red Planet” (bad movie in my opinion, but decent sci-fi tech) they had devices like the scrolling displays PARC is working on. Of course, the ones in the movie were also able to take xrays, etc., but the premise of having a roll up display for maps, documents, etc. is just really cool. Some other companies (Sony, etc.) are working on books that use paper displays to simulate a normal book (feel of paper pages, etc.). These “eBooks” would store literature that you can download and read like a normal book, but that one eBook could be the same on you read thousands of titles out of and maybe even get your local newspaper delivered to.
Another site talked about using a fabric that had pretty much the same properties. Uses ranged from health care to military. Imagine a soldier in the field being able to use their uniform sleeve to view a map or instructions on how to repair a piece of equipment! Now clearly this is something that needs to be added to a removable pocket on the Utilikilts.
